Hildreth Hosea Fleming, Jr.
Hildreth Hosea Fleming, Jr. (aka Bumpty or Flem) departed this life on
Saturday, November 16, 2024. Services will be held on Saturday
November 30, 2024, at 10:00 am, at Allen Temple AME Church, 2101 N.
Lowe Street, Tampa, Fl. 33605, Glenn Dames, Pastor. Rev. Reginald
Davis, Officiating, Rev. Maurice D. Taylor, Eulogist. He was a devoted
husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and
friend. He was born in Tampa, Florida on April 3, 1942, to the union of the
late Hildreth Hosea Fleming, Sr. and Eunice Celeste Fleming Floyd and
later Famous Theodore Floyd (stepfather).
He accepted Jesus Christ at an early age under the pastoral leadership of
Reverand Jasper P. Saunders. He later moved his membership to Beulah
Baptist Institutional Church, where he served as a Trustee under the
leadership of Reverend Dr. W. James Favorite. On April 18. 2021, he
moved his membership to New Progress Missionary Baptist Church, where
he served faithfully until his illness under the leadership of Pastor Maurice
D. Taylor.
His formal education began at Doby Ville Elementary (West Hyde Park),
George Washington Carver, Jr. Middle School, and Howard W. Blake High
School. He was a proud member of the marching Yellow Jackets. During
the Civil Rights Movement and while a student at Howard W. Blake High
School, he participated in the Woolworth Sit -In on February 29, 1960, to
protest segregated lunch counters.
He completed his studies at Howard W. Blake with the class of 1960 and
continued his zest for learning by enrolling into secondary education at the
prestigious, The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU)
where he was also a member of the “Marching 100”.
He graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, returned to
Tampa and married his college sweetheart Virginia Gail Brown and from
that union two loving daughters, Vivian Alvarez and Tamara Estrill-Lett,
were born.
He began his career with US Customs. A year later, he followed his
passion for education and began teaching night school at Just Junior High.
He then transferred to Benjamin Franklin Jr. High School where he
remained a dedicated social study, geography teacher and School
Community Intervention Specialist. He retired from education after 40 plus
years at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in 2010.
He was initiated into his beloved fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
Tampa Alumni on April 17, 1972.
In 1987, he married Janice Coney, from that union two loving children,
Ashley Fleming and Hildreth Aaron Fleming were born.
Many of the Youth of Tampa spent their Summers with Mr. Fleming at the
National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) at the University of South Florida
where he served as Director. Mr. Fleming was an avid tennis player where
he could be found at Riverfront Park on the courts. He was a tennis coach
at Jefferson High School. He had a love for sports cars. Many will
remember his burgundy Triumph TR6 cars and his very fashionable attire.
In 2009, he married Queen Mock, this union created a blended family
which he gained stepchildren, Hadassah Israel, Manuel Walcott and Vergus
Mock III.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hildreth Fleming, Sr. and Eunice
Fleming Floyd and stepfather, Famous T. Floyd, grandmother, Amelia
Williams (James), son Hildreth Aaron Fleming, cousins, Islay Streeter and
Janet Ferrell-Thomas and loving aunts and uncles.
He leaves to cherish loving memories of him: a loving and devoted wife,
Queen Mock-Fleming; children, Vivian Alvarez, Tamara Estrill-Lett (Jearl),
Ashley Fleming; stepchildren, Dayna Thomas (Brandon), Hadassah Israel,
Manuel Walcott, and Vergus Mock III (Ashanti); sister, Carol Brown
(Charles); brothers, Gregory Fleming, Sr. (Stephanie), Theodore Floyd
(Octeon); grandchildren, Christian Alvarez (Emily), Darren Alvarez
(Jasalyn), Lea Estrill, Alec Estrill, Kaden Johnson, Noah Lett; step-
grandchildren, Jada Powell, Saphira Thomas, Jordan Williams, Nathan
Mkparu, Jediah Mkparu, Alayhia Thomas, Dallas Walcott, Blake Walcott,
Jayla Mock, Lauryn Mock, Renne Mock; great-grandchild, Hailey Alvarez;
mother-in-law, Janice Williams; brothers-in-law, Earlie Williams Jr.(Brenda),
David Williams (Emma), James Williams, Michael Williams (Lissette),
sister-in-law, Earline Wiliams (Janice); nephews, Vincent Floyd, Isaiah
Floyd. Gregory Fleming, Jr.; step-nephews, Earlie Williams III (Denise),
Bryan Williams (Kessala), Donnell Williams (Tanya), Andre Williams (Toni),
Isiah Williams, Micah Williams; nieces, Lauren Ward (Charles), Cicily
Randolph (Brian), Kayla Dozier; step-nieces, Nardina Mason (Maurice),
Lakecia Fortune, Tiffany Williams, Ebony Williams; dear cousins, James
Lies (Ramona), Rovenia Council, James Straughter, Yasmin Dilbert,
LaFawn McKay, Grady Ferrell III and special friends, Minnie Coney and
Joe Reid.
Special thanks to the health care workers of Hospice Empath and Emma
Peterson (home aid) for services rendered throughout his illness,
Hadassah Israel, Tanesha and Tiffany Williams (step-nieces)
(stepdaughter) for their steadfast service to Hildreth Fleming, Jr. Forever
grateful for your acts of kindness and love.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 29, 2024, from 4:00pm until
6:00pm at New Progress M.B. Church, 3307 E. Shadowlawn Ave, Tampa,
Fl. 33610. Arrangements entrusted to Aden Funeral Home.
